A wee bit o Celtic history

pad
The Celtic StorypadThe passing down of Celtic culture was mostly oral and therefore somewhat vague until their contact with Greece and Rome. The bravery of Celts in battle is legendary. They often spurned body armour, going naked into battle. (wearing nothing but our necklace we're sure!) Women were on a more or less equal footing as men being accomplished warriors, merchants and rulers...(gotta love those Celt women). The name Britain derives from Celtic. The Greek author Pytheas called them the "Pretanic Isles" which derived from the inhabitants name for themselves, Pritani. This was mistranslated into Latin as "Brittania". The Celts migrated to Ireland from Europe, conquering the original inhabitants. A tribe called the "Scotti" came to prominence around the River Clyde and later Argyll on the West coast of Scotland. The Celts donated their cultural influence on the linguistic and artistic development of Europe. They as a people have long since disappeared, except in places such as Ireland and the Scottish highlands.
